2nd time = launched out of crib

Alright - I have had such a good response to the Princess foot dilemma that now I need advice on what to do with a climbing toddler. She climbed out of her crib again this afternoon. Not sure how she is exactly doing it, but we think she grabs on to the corner and uses her upper body strength to pull her legs over and then slides down. We don't think she's actually launching out and falling because you don't hear a thud.

This all being said, what should I do? Do you move a 20 month old to a toddler bed and deal with all that drama or do you slap a crib tent on top of her current bed and hope for the best. The crib tents that I've looked up say it won't fit on our crib because the headboard is higher than the foot board. If I rig it then is it really that safe? I worry about her attempting to get out of her crib and getting tangled in it. I obviously worry about all the other factors if she's in a toddler bed. She'll be all over her room. It's not 100% safe for her to be alone in her bedroom. We can make adjustments, but it's never 100% safe.

So...what should I do? I have friends who have kept their kids in a crib until they were 3 and I have other friends who transitioned to a toddler bed when they were babies. She could always move back into the bed with me - JUST KIDDING!!! That was to make sure you're still reading.

Thanks in advance to all your responses to this blog post. Also, thank you for all the well wishes with Peyton's foot. The drama of being a toddler and being a Mom. Maybe that's what I'll call my blog - Mama's Drama!

When Lexie climbed out, we moved her, but she was 26 months. She went right into a twin bed with a rail. I have friends who have done mattress on the floor or toddler bed and the tent. She was perfectly capable of getting in and out effectively (and eager to show us). I just felt safest transitioning her, and didn't want to have to do another transition. Her room was safe enough and she never left the bed for the first month or so (no clue why). That certainly changed, however.
Of course our house is one story and small so we are right there too.

On another note, I would take the climbing as a sign that things are well enough with the leg.

And in response to my blog, Crocs with Socks? Kel, come on!

Daddy supports the bed idea. One side against the wall, and the other with the rail on it. Keep her from rolling out probably, but now she can climb out and in if she wants.

I can't stand the idea of caging her in completely. I think the world is nuts when kenneling our daughter is a viable option.

My niece was moved to a toddler bed at the age of 16 months because she was doing the same thing for both bed and nap time. She did just fine and she liked that she could play just a little longer and then get back into bed to sleep. We are planing on putting a twin mattress on the floor when Hannah is ready just becuase we have wood floors, and then get the rest of the bed with a rail when she is ready for that part. Good luck

I am with everyone else, moving to the toddler bed idea. We are going to do that in June with Christian before the baby comes so he will be 21 months. We have a small twin bed that we are going to put a railing up on one side. The Fletchers did it with Sidney at 13 months or so I think and it worked for them. It takes more discipline and time to help them understand they need to stay in the bed, but in the end , I think it is the safest alternative.

Addyson moved to a toddler bed when she was 28mos I think? I thought she'd be rolling out, playing and stuff. But she did just the opposite. She loved having her own big girl bed so much. She needed the space to stretch out. She's never, ever rolled out of it. I don't have a rail on it, it comes with the little half one. If Peyton wants out a rail would just be kind of like a test and a reason to try and climb over. And because it's "Addyson's" big girl bed, she wants to stay in it. Once in a while she'd snatch up a toy and take it in bed with her. But she's never up roaming around.
Good Luck!

(ps. Take her to the store and let her climb in a few see what she thinks!)

Just wanted to be sure that you knew: for us the rail was for rolling.
And the first time we thought we were ok to remove it, she did fall out of the bed... she moves a lot in her sleep.
Our rail was long enough to cover where she slept but short enough to provide areas in and out where she would not need to climb over it. And she didn't try to.
Its true, the big girl bed is something they are very proud of.

Ohhh tough one!!! Kai did this too but when she climbed out she hurt herself. Never tried it again. I have been working so hard to get her to stay in her toddler bed. Now she wants her crib back and I gave in to get some sleep (cant do newborn and toddler awake at night) I put the toddler bed in her room and she plays, reads, and pretends to sleep on it. I now have decided that she will sleep there when she is ready, and we are getting a new crib for Devin. So what I am trying to say is... get a bed, put it in her room and give her the option to sleep in one or the other, you might find that she chooses the crib.
I guess they are all different!!

Wow! I am not looking forward to this change, luckily we have a little while. I support the toddler bed. My cousin and I were just talking about this. She said her little guy will get out, get a toy and go back into the bed. Only a few times did she find him asleep on the floor. More often she finds random toys in his bed..too funny. Good luck

Look at it this way - move Peyton to a toddler bed and then you have a crib for #2... and if you deal with the toddler bed drama now, when baby what's her name comes, it will be one less thing to deal with. Who knows - she may LOVE the "big girl bed"

Well, my father the knower of all things potentially fatal to babies says absolutely not on the crib tent. Just his two cents through me!
