Peyton -
Happy Birthday Darling! I am so proud of you :) You had your 2 week check-up yesterday and you are back up to your birth weight at 9.5 pounds which puts you in the 95th percentile. You are now 22.3 inches long which puts you off the chart in height. (Yes, you are so tall already that you don't even fit into the normal chart.) And, the size of your head is in the 90th percentile. You passed with flying colors. Your little broken clavicle is healing too. The doctor wants to see you again in 2 weeks to make sure it's perfect so we go back August 6th.
I also learned something new today. Breastfeeding is not all that mother nature intended. Our Pediatrician told us that we have to supplement vitamins every day since I am breastfeeding. Formula fed babies do not need the extra vitamins because formula is fortified. The Pediatrician said that breast milk lacks Vitamin D and a few other vitamins. Who would have thought? I have never heard that. No one mentioned this in our breastfeeding classes. So we now have to give you vitamins everyday.
Alright, well, we're off to our 2nd play date. We're meeting Rachael and Neil Craig with their little girl Graceanna. We're going to have lunch at 1 p.m. It's now 11:45 a.m. and your asleep in your swing. The trick now is figuring out how to wake you, dress you, feed you and then go so that way I don't have to tackle the feeding in public thing yet.
Love always,
Mommy

awww..I write letters to Lorelai, but never thought of putting them on my blog. Good letter, mommy!!!!
I have heard from that while breastmilk does not contain much vitamin D, the baby stores up enough of it during pregnancy that there is no need to supplement unless the mom is known to be deficient (and simply taking the baby in the sunlight for 10 min a day can fulfill the vitamin deficiency) Hmm I will have to ask my midwife about that one - so many questions! :)
It sounds like mommy life is suiting you well!!
LOVE the letter... what a good mommy you are :)
I was never informed that about nursing and vitamin D... but at the same time it doesn't completely catch me off guard. I don't know, but if you are wondering about it, then you might question i or other options like adjusting your diet.
Lexie was big like Peyton (not over 9 pounds, but 22 inches at birth) and I nursed her the entire first year with no additional supplements (baby food and introduction of whole milk aside). THought I would share in case you were wondering about other moms experience. I think things like that are often dependent on doctor and location, etc.
Seems like you girls have certainly gotten into a nice groove and that you are really enjoying it :) You go, girls!
Here are a couple articles on the topic of vitamin supplements and breasfeeding:

Kelly,
Our Dr. "suggested/recommended" vitamins as well, but they were so gross that Gracie spit it right back up, so we stopped. I wouldn't have swallwed that stinky stuff either! I nursed her exclusively until about 5 months then supplemented with formula because I was back at work and not getting anything pumped. She's healthy and still growing like a weed, If you're eating right (vitamin D is in everything), you're all she needs. (In my non-expert opinion :)) Sounds like you're happy, how sweet to write letters to Peyton!!

Kel,
I second what every other Mom has already written! Micayla was supposed to have Vit D supplements too, and she also hated them. I ended up giving up on giving them to her, b/c she spit it out every time, and it stained her clothes. And thankfully another pediatrician down the line said it was hog wash, I was eating heatlhy, so she would be fine. Always listen to your instincts, Mommy's always know what's best for their babes
